Title: Open Science: Overcoming (Some) Barriers to Practice

Abstract: Open Science is an umbrella term for a number of related yet distinct practices aimed at increasing the overall transparency, efficiency, and accessibility of scientific research across all disciplines. These practices include open access publications, open data, open source infrastructure, and open process (e.g., code, methods, peer review). Barriers to adoption vary widely across these practices, from economic forces to technological limitations. This talk will discuss some of the key drivers of and impediments to Open Science as well as ways that researchers at all levels can make their research more open right now. In addition, the talk will discuss work underway at the University of Colorado Boulder to overcome some of the larger and more challenging barriers to Open Science practices.

Bio: Andrew Johnson is Associate Professor and Head of Data Services and Scholarly Communication at the University of Colorado Boulder (CU Boulder) Libraries and Director of the Research Data Management Initiative at the CU Boulder Center for Research Data and Digital Scholarship. In these roles, he provides strategic direction for library and campus data services and scholarly communication initiatives, including the CU Scholar institutional repository, research data curation, and open access policy implementation. His research interests focus on emerging library services and infrastructure for research data management, open access, open science, and related areas.
