Statement by Lori Hunter, Director, Institute of Behavioral Science, on research funding
March 11, 2025
The current, broad-based threats to research funding threaten individual and community well-being across the nation. At the Institute of Behavioral Science, such investments fuel research that is essential to improving health and well-being by reducing substance abuse, understanding cognitive decline, improving access to health care, reducing violence, enhancing resilience and response to natural disasters, and more. This research also provides the training ground for the next generation of investigators committed to improving societal well-being.
Our dedicated researchers, staff, and students are committed to this essential work, but it simply cannot take place without funding to support needed labor and infrastructure. In addition to funding research salaries, the “Facilities and Administrative” support (“F&A”, often termed “indirect cost return”) provide for essential shared infrastructure such as administrative staff for managing budgets.
I urge the public to learn more about the role of research funding in social science scholarship as well as Facilities and Administrative (F&A) funding (PDF).
