Justice by Video Workshop

April 25 @ 3:30 pm - 5:30 pm

Please note, this event is only open to the public from 3:30 – 5:30 p.m. MT.

Without systematic guidance and applications for treating video as evidence in the age of AI, human rights and civil rights may be disparately recognized and upheld. Justice by Video is a full-day, collaborative workshop that brings together scholars from across the humanities, social sciences, law, and STEM fields as well as judges, attorneys, journalists, and foundations with the goals of developing new avenues for research and potential policy proposals that speak to the following questions:

  • What is needed to improve legal processes regarding the use of video as evidence?
  • How can research help?

The newly founded Visual Evidence Lab will be launched during the public portion of the workshop, 3:30 – 5:30 pm.

The public event will feature a video screening of Incident, an Oscar-nominated short film about a deadly Chicago shooting involving graphic police footage. After the screening, the directors of the film will answer questions from the audience via Zoom. Select participants from the closed portion of the workshop will then give their take on the film’s body camera footage, each from their respective discipline. The event will conclude with time for audience questions.

Public Portion Schedule:

3:30 – 4 p.m. – Screening of Incident, Oscar-nominated short film

4 – 4:30 p.m. – Q&A with film directors via Zoom

4:30 – 5:30 p.m. – Public roundtable
