Brief Biography
Avery is the Program Strategy & Research Dissemination Coordinator at the University of Colorado Firearm Injury Prevention Initiative and an affiliate with the Prevention Science Program. She is also a research consultant with the Family Safety Net project led by the Maniilaq Association and the University of Michigan. Her work is grounded in strengths-based, community-centered practices and currently focuses on the prevention of firearm suicide and sexual assault. She is passionate about the development and evaluation of interpersonal violence prevention programs for youth, reproductive justice, health equity, harm reduction, and community-based participatory research. Avery’s work in firearm injury prevention has focused on developing community-based lethal means reduction strategies to increase youth safety and strengthening frameworks for preventing mass shootings and identity-based violence. She also has extensive experience developing and facilitating interpersonal violence prevention trainings on sexual assault, consent, healthy relationships, and active intervention strategies for undergraduate and graduate students. Avery holds a Master of Public Health in Health Behavior and Health Education from the University of Michigan School of Public Health and a BA in Justice and Peace Studies and Women’s and Gender Studies from Georgetown University.
