Brief Biography

Joel Hartter is a Professor in the Department of Environmental Studies at the University of Colorado. Between 2014 and 2023 he was the founding Director of Professional Programs in sustainability and the outdoor industry, which included both the Masters of the Environment and Outdoor Recreation Economy graduate programs. Joel is an international expert in sustainability, with more than two decades of experience. His diverse career spans work across the value chain in the public, private, and non-profit sectors. He has worked with dozens of organizations and industry leaders to embed sustainability within brands, align sustainability to create strategic growth opportunities, manage and mitigate risk, and create a compelling business proposition for sustainability. Joel’s expertise is in sustainability strategy and implementation, behavioral change, stakeholder engagement, business development, partnership building, and leading change.
