Brief Biography
Meghan Mordy is a research associate at the Natural Hazards Center. She received her Ph.D. in Sociology from Colorado State University and has a Master’s in Public Administration from the University of Washington. Her research experience is based in international development, education, poverty, and community violence. For her dissertation, she completed ethnographic fieldwork and qualitative interviews with children and youth struggling to stay in school in El Salvador.
Meghan joined the Natural Hazards Center in 2021 where she will support a range of the center’s core activities and several ongoing projects, including research sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, CONVERGE, and the United States Geological Survey. Specifically, she will be contributing to research studies and practical applications that focus on children and other vulnerable populations in disaster, education and schools, and the ethical conduct of research.
Meghan is also an instructor in Sociology at Colorado State University where she teaches courses on population, natural resources, and environment and the sociology of race and racism. Her current research interests include climate change, internal displacement, community and gender-based violence, education, and disaster risk reduction in Central America.
